“If a diet promotes rapid weight loss, we know it’s a fad,” says Keri Gans, RD, author of The Small Change Diet. Losing one to two pounds a week is healthy, but if you’re subscribing to a strategy that takes off more than that, you’ll likely gain it back right away. Not to mention those diets typically fail to teach any lifestyle changes—they usually revolve around eliminating foods, Gans adds. “In order to be successful with a weight loss plan you need to be taught to eat a healthy meal.”
