1979: Set the Boston Marathon course record
In many ways Samuelson set the pace for future female distance runners. The virtual unknown stunned spectators when she smashed the Boston Marathon course record by eight minutes in 1979. She went on to win again in 1983, shaving another two minutes off of the world’s best time, and setting a record that stood for the following 11 years. Samuelson also nabbed gold at the first Olympic women’s marathon in 1984.
