Get ready for some fast-paced female bonding. Women’s sportswear company, Title Nine, invites moms and daughters of all ages to pound the pavement together. (Search: How many miles is a 9K?) There’s even a separate category for moms with baby joggers. If your Mother’s Day is already booked solid, you can catch additional Title 9K races in the Bay Area and in Chicago in September and October, respectively.

2. Run Like a Mother

Join an all-female race in one of 8 cities across the country, including Seattle, Dallas, Portland, and Milwaukee. Megan Searfoss, a mother and athlete from Santa Rosa, founded the event in 2008 to celebrate the strength of women. If there’s not a race in your hometown, you can sign up for the virtual run instead. $19.95 buys you an official T-shirt and training plan.

3. Fleet Feet Sports Mother's Day 5K

Your morning brunch plans won’t interfere with this evening race. Once you cross the finish line, you can strut your stuff on the red carpet, sip wine, and relax to live music.

4. Moms Rock Run

Distance: 1-mile fun run or 5K
Location: Manasquan, NJ
Fees: Adults, $30; $20 for children 12 and under

Sponsored by a local elementary school, this race supports the city’s educational programs. The school with the most participants wins a cash prize for its PTO or PTA. Following the race, participants can refuel at an outdoor barbecue. 

5. Kirkland Half Marathon
Date: May 12, 2013
Distance: Half Marathon or 5K run and walk
Location: Kirkland, WA
Fees: $35-$65, depending on race and when you register. Kids’ dash is free.

Moms in the mood for a challenge can take on this Washington half-marathon. For their effort, participants will be treated to picturesque views of Lake Washington. Runners in the mood for something short and sweet can register for the 5K instead. Meanwhile, kids can participate in the free Kids Dash, where they can taste test healthy snacks at the finish.

6. The Race

Distance: 1 mile
Location: Cleveland, OH
Fees: $15

Founded by an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old, this annual event raises money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. In addition to participating in the mile run, families have the opportunity to learn about the disease and enjoy refreshments, entertainment, and kid-geared activities, such as craft-making, facepainting, and a bounce house. The individuals who raise the most money will receive prizes, which include restaurant coupons.

7. Girls on the Run 5K

Location: New Orleans, LA and Las Vegas, NV
Fees: $25-$40 depending on when you register

The race supports Girls on the Run, a national nonprofit that uses running to help preteens develop self-esteem and life skills. 8. Swift Cantrell Classic: A Mother’s Day Race for More Play Space

Location: Kennesaw, GA

Proceeds from this yearly affair support the local Swift Cantrell park. Expect a fast course with some rolling hills through the city’s main drag. The best part: Participants enjoy a free pancake breakfast after crossing the finish line.

9. Moms on the Run

Location: Dover, NH
Fees: $20-$25, depending on when you register; $5 for children 12 and under

Two New Hampshire moms originally founded this event six years ago as a way to celebrate friends, family, and the community through exercise. Every two years they choose a different local non-profit to support with the money the race draws. By running this year, you’ll be supporting Zebra Crossings, a nonprofit that offers camps for children with chronic health conditions like diabetes, asthma, juvenile arthritis, and epilepsy.

10. Tiara Classic Mother’s Day 5K

Distance: 5K, staggered start kids fun run
Location: Mattapoisett, MA
Fees: $20-$30, depending on when you register; kids’ fun run, $5

Don your crown or cape—costumes are encouraged at this race that honors superhero-like moms. The event’s proceeds benefit the Women’s Fund, which helps women and girls in southeastern Massachusetts attain educational opportunities.

11. Lund Mother’s Day Ride Benefit

Saddle up and join more than 300 cyclists for a family ride to celebrate Mom. Once your brood’s finished pedaling 16, 30, or 55 miles, you can unwind with tasty eats from local vendors.

12. Christina Clarke Genco Mother’s Day Memorial Ride
Date: May 12, 2013
Distance: 3.4, 17, 34 or 68 miles
Fees: $40, plus a $100-$500 suggested fundraising goal

The event commemorates the life of Christina Clarke Genco, who lost her life in a tragic accident. Funds go to a foundation set up in her name, which supports affordable housing, safe biking, and a women’s lacrosse scholarship. The distances reflect Christina’s lacrosse jersey numbers.

13. Umbrella Mother’s Day Fun Run

Distance: 5k, 10-K, half-mile kids fun run
Location: East Burke, VT
Fees: $30; $15 for students ages 11 and up; children under 11 free

The Vermont countryside that makes up this course offers plenty of scenic views, between Burke Mountain and Willoughby Gap. In addition to individual awards, a prize will be handed out to the fastest combined mother-child team. A portion of the race proceeds goes to Umbrella, a Vermont nonprofit that provides support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

This beach path out-and-back offers something for both advanced and beginning runners with three different distances. Regardless of the race you choose, all runners receive a special Mother’s Day gift and a medal after they cross the finish line. 

16. Mother’s Day Run for Shelter

By lacing up for this race you’ll support the Pajaro Valley Shelter Services, an organization that helps homeless women, children, and families obtain housing. The top three finishers in each age category (which are staggered every five years) receive medals, so stick around for the award ceremony!
